Application of Exosome-based Drug Delivery System in Combination Anticancer Treatment
Song Young-Cheon
Abstract
Background : Although cancer chemotherapy has made great progress so far, monotherapy still has clear limitations. For example, it lacks therapeutic effect. Therefore, in cancer chemotherapy, combination therapy of several drugs is widely used as it shows better than outcomes better than monotherapy. However, it also has limitations. Thus, various attempts are being made to overcome these limitations.
Exosomes are nanoscale extracellular vesicles released from multiple cells. They are involved in regulating cell-to-cell communication. Exosome is a natural liposome with excellent biocompatibility. Thus, it can be loaded with various intracellular component or other materials. Drugs loaded into exosomes are more readily absorbed by cells, avoid drug resistance, and maintain half-lives. In addition, exosomes can be isolated from patients and loaded with drugs. This approach of drug delivery through exosomes shows low toxicity.

Conclusion : The use of exosome as a smart drug delivery system to overcome limitations of cancer chemotherapy so far is expected to be a turning point in achieving many improvements in terms of effectiveness and side effects of cancer chemotherapy and efficiency in clinical practice.
